Complete Guide to Student Visa Requirements

Obtaining your F-1 visa is a fundamental step to studying in the USA. This process requires careful preparationand attention to detail.

Step 1: Obtain Your I-20 Form

First, you must be accepted at a SEVP-certified university. Once accepted, the institution will send you the I-20 form, which is your official acceptance letter and the most important document. Review it carefully to verify all your information is correct.

Step 2: Pay the SEVIS Fee (I-901)

Before applying for your visa, you must pay the SEVIS fee online (currently $350 USD). Save the confirmation receipt, you’ll need it for your interview. Make this payment at least three days before your consular appointment.

Step 3: Complete the DS-160 Form

This visa application form is completed online. You’ll need a recent digital photo that meets strict specifications. Print the confirmation page with the barcode.

Step 4: Schedule Your Consular Interview

Pay the visa application fee (approximately $185 USD) and schedule your appointment at the nearest US consulate. Wait times vary, so do this in advance.
