What English Level Do I Need to Study in the USA?

Studying in the United States is a dream for many international students, but one of the most important requirements is demonstrating your English language proficiency. Here’s everything you need to know.

Accepted English Proficiency Tests

US universities primarily accept three standardized tests:

  • TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language) The most popular among American universities. Most institutions require a minimum score of 80-100 points out of 120. This test evaluates reading, writing, listening comprehension, and speaking in an academic context.
  • IELTS Academic Increasingly accepted in the USA. You generally need a score of 6.5-7.0 out of 9.0. This test is especially useful if you’re also considering studying in the UK or Australia.
  • Duolingo English Test Gained popularity during the pandemic due to its accessibility. Many universities now accept scores of 105-120 out of 160. It’s more affordable and taken from home.

Score Requirements by Program Type

  • Undergraduate: TOEFL 79-80 / IELTS 6.0-6.5
  • Graduate: TOEFL 90-100 / IELTS 6.5-7.5
  • Competitive Programs (Ivy League): TOEFL 100+ / IELTS 7.5+
Exemptions

You may be exempt if you studied at a school where English was the primary language of instruction, or if your country has English as an official language. Each university has its own policies.

Preparation Tips

  • Start your preparation at least 6 months in advance.
  • Practice all four skills daily: listen to academic podcasts, read scientific articles, write essays, and practice conversation.
  • Consider taking a specialized preparatory course and take practice tests regularly to familiarize yourself with the format.
